Biography

Alex Baranowski is a multi-award-winning composer whose collaborators include some of the most celebrated artists and filmmakers of their generation. Recent film work includes co-scoring Daniel Kaluuya’s debut feature, The Kitchen (Netflix / Film 4), alongside Labrinth, as well as Gaumont/Netflix film Locked In (Netflix), The Teacher, Midas Man (Amazon), and Brides, which premiered at Sundance in 2025.

Other film scores include the twice BAFTA-nominated feature McCullin (Curzon), Nureyev (Universal Film), A Christmas Carol, and the critically acclaimed A Gaza Weekend (Alcove Entertainment). In 2021, he won the Les Arcs award for Harry Wootliff’s True Things (The Bureau / BBC). His score for The Windermere Children (BBC / Warner Bros) garnered a BAFTA nomination and won the Prix Europa Award for Best TV Movie, with a soundtrack released by Sony Classical. Television credits include HBO series Rain Dogs (HBO / Sid Gentle), Frauds (ITV), and three series of the hit show Staged (BBC). In commercials, he has scored shorts for directors including Wes Anderson (H&M) and Taika Waititi.

Nominated for a Tony Award for The Cripple of Inishmaan on Broadway, Alex has composed for numerous theatre productions around the world. These include Frankenstein (National Theatre) with Danny Boyle and Underworld, and A Streetcar Named Desire starring Gillian Anderson, with whom Alex went on to score her directorial debut, The Departure. Most recently, he scored a new version of Cyrano de Bergerac (RSC), transferring to the West End in 2026. His work in ballet includes the South Bank Award-winning Nineteen Eighty-Four (Sadler’s Wells) and Legacy Variations (Dutch National Ballet).

As a composer and sound designer, Alex created the distinct soundtrack for BBC Two’s idents, the 2026 Winter Olympics theme, and the last two World Cup themes. His collaborations with artists include working with The xx and the BBC Philharmonic (performed at the Hollywood Bowl), as well as Jungle, Clean Bandit, and Labrinth, for whom he arranged orchestra for Coachella and fashion shows for Valentino, Balenciaga and Carter. He has also collaborated with virtuoso violinists Daniel Hope and Angèle Dubeau, the latter of whom released an album of Alex’s work, Portrait.
