Audrey Ismaël
Singer-songwriter Audrey Ismaël embodies the flair of the self-taught: an innate sense of rhythm, a visceral connection to music, and a taste for adventure. Her Réunionese roots gave her a love of polyrhythms and an instinctive way of drawing melodic lines from deep within. After releasing a critically acclaimed album, her songwriting sparked a desire to compose for film, leading to her co-writing the score for Vanessa Filho's Angel Face, an official selection at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival ("Un Certain Regard").
She has twice won the Best Score Award at the La Rochelle Festival for her work on acclaimed television series like Vortex and Germinal. Her film work is prolific, with her credits in 2023 and 2024 including Vanessa Filho's Consent and two noteworthy debuts at the 77th Cannes Film Festival: Agathe Riedinger's Wild Diamond (Official Competition) and Julien Colonna's The Kingdom (Un Certain Regard).
In her scores, Audrey weaves the organic with the electronic, working the material and texture of sound itself. She explores the emotional range of the cello, a favourite instrument for its voice-like quality and its deep, visceral resonance that seems to echo the souls of the characters. Her versatility is a hallmark, demonstrated in scores ranging from the traditional Réunionese and Maloya influences of Marmaille to the blend of Egyptian percussion and Eastern rock tones for the adventure film The Secret of Khéops.
In December 2024, the Les Arcs Film Festival honoured Audrey with the "Breakthrough Composer for Film" award. Her scores in 2025 have included Guillaume de Fontenay’s Badh, the historical epic Anaon, and Julien Colonna’s Rivages. She is currently scoring several upcoming series, including Belphegor, the first series produced by Pathé (for M6 / HBO).
