Biography

CJ Mirra is an Australian/British recording artist, composer and sound designer based in the UK. CJ began writing music to picture for numerous surf films, creating music soon dubbed "the sound of cold water surfing”, but was soon invited to score numerous TV series and films.

In early 2025 he was asked by director Akinola Davies to oversee the sound and music of his feature debut, My Father’s Shadow (Element / MUBI), and co-scored the film with Duval Timothy. TV credits include the flagship US drama, Rescue: Hi Surf (John Wells Productions / Warner). BBC Drama's Kidnapped (co-scored with Andrea Balency), Apple TV+'s Make or Break, and award-winning films such as Lizard (Akinola Davies), Layla (Amrou Al-Khadi), Nascondino (Victoria Fiore), A Banquet (Ruth Paxton) – for which he won best horror soundtrack – and Martin Radich's Norfolk, collaborating with Chris Watson & JG Thirlwell, among many others.

His fluid, emotive and original approach to music and sound design, combining otherworldly electronics with live instrumentation, has led to long-standing collaborations with filmmakers from many different backgrounds and genres. His sound design work has received a British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Sound for the feature documentary Time Trial (Finlay Pretsell). He has also created many immersive audio-visual installations for Somerset House, LightNight and other art performance events, including a pioneering binaural live experience with sonic artist Dallas Simpson.

CJ’s longest-running collaboration is with surf film director Chris McClean, a partnership that toured an award-winning live audio/visual performance worldwide as well as releasing 'Static (Original Surf Soundtracks Vol I)’ and ‘Translate’ via the State51 Conspiracy label.

CJ launched CJ's Mirra Maze, a new band project, in 2023, releasing two singles, and was invited to support cult legends Panchiko on their sold-out UK tour. Other studio work has contributed to releases by Mount Kimbie, Allen Ginsberg, Mike Slott and many more.
