Clark
Since 2001, Chris Clark has sculpted sound into a myriad of diverse forms. Signed at an early age to legendary British indie label Warp Records, his two decades in music have witnessed experiments in electronica and techno, with equally colourful adventures in classical compositions for Deutsche Grammophon and his own Throttle Records. To date, he has releasedeleven albums, including Playground In A Lake and his firstvocal-centred record, 2023’s Sus Dog, produced under the mentorship of Thom Yorke.
Clark’s debut score was for the 2015 miniseries The Last Panthers (Sky / Canal+), created by Jack Thorne and directed by Johan Renck. Following his score for Rellik (BBC1 / HBO), Thornewould again cross paths with Clark for his miniseries Kiri(Channel 4 / Hulu). Highlighting the symbiotic relationship between his solocareer and his collaborators, Clark wove threads of this scoring work into the Kiri Variations album. His first feature film soundtrack in 2019, the psychological horror Daniel Isn’t Real (Spectre Vision), merged distorted techno with orchestral arrangements.
The 2021 miniseries Lisey’s Story (Apple TV+)raised the stakes. Adapted by Stephen King, executive produced by J.J. Abrams, and directed by Pablo Larraín, its premium budget allowed Clark access to the celebrated Abbey Road and Air studios, shaping the epic, driving motifs of a30-piece string ensemble and choir. Recently, he scored Naqqash Khalid’s directorial debut In Camera, crafting a soundtrack that acts as an extension of the film’s atmosphere and interiority, as well as NEON’s We Bury the Dead. Beyond bespoke scores, Clark has a rich history off licensing music for projects as diverse as Neill Blomkamp's $100m feature film Elysium and the hit video game Sleeping Dogs.
The physicality of Clark’s everchanging sound also excels in the physicalmedium of dance. One of his closest and most prolific collaborators ischoreographer Melanie Lane, scoring contemporary dance projects including Tilted Fawn (Sydney Opera House), the Kier Choreographic Prize-winning Personal Effigies, and WOOF (Sydney Dance Company). Their continuingpartnership has resulted in 2023’s Mountain and 2024’s dance opera Arkadia, drawing on Clark's growing orchestral experience to evoke mythical themes through a confluence of acoustic and electronic movement.
