Biography

Gemma Doherty is an Irish composer, harpist and vocalist. She started out performing live and recording as one half of electronic-folk duo Saint Sister. Touring worldwide and supporting artists such as Hozier, Tori Amos and Keane, highlights include an NPR Tiny Desk and two critically acclaimed albums. Their 2021 record won Best Album in N.I. Music Prize, and nominations for Album of the Year in Choice Music Prize and RTÉ Folk Awards.

Over the last number of years, Gemma has turned her focus to instrumental composition and scoring for screen. Recent films include 2025 psychological thriller I Hope We Can Still Be Friends directed by Aisha Tyler and BBC feature documentary The Disappearance of Captain Nairac directed by Alison Millar. She worked alongside Mikey J. Asante on additional composition for Kneecap released in 2024, which won the Sundance NEXT Audience Award and BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. Short films include Relic which premiered at Sheffield DocFest and Ogham which won Best Original Score at Kerry International Film Festival.

Gemma performed harp/keys/vocals on Bono’s 23-date “Stories of Surrender” tour, and keys/vocals in Crash Ensemble’s Irish tour of Philip Glass’ “Glassworks”. She has performed or collaborated with artists such as Lisa Hannigan, Kneecap, Fred Again, David Holmes, Kormac, Villagers, Denise Chaila, John Francis Flynn, Rachael Lavelle and more.
