Matthew Herbert

Matthew Herbert is a multi award-winning recording and performing artist and composer who translates his unique worldview into sound and music. Whether in the form of albums, orchestral film scores, electronic dance records, live concerts, opera, the exploration of the life of a pig, or a 21 piece jazz band, Matthew is impossible to categorise; his groundbreaking approach makes him one of the most important British artists of his generation.

As a film and television composer, Matthew collaborates with the wider creative team to create a new sonic language from scratch for every project – the music becoming a sonic extension of the story. He has commissioned the manufacture of entirely new instruments for some scores, as well as using sounds including the actors themselves, the insides of fallen oak trees, hare skeletons, and 1000 dogs.

Matthew collaborates best with like-minded filmmakers who want to both change the form and to change the world. He wants to create work which has a positive social impact and elevates underrepresented ideas and voices. With a resume featuring the Oscar-winning A Fantastic Woman, multiple Black Mirror episodes, Karim Ainouz’s Rosebush Pruning, his innovative work has earned him a BIFA (The Wonder), a BAFTA nomination (The Responder), and multiple Ivor Novello nods.
