Piers Burbrook De Vere

Piers Burbrook de Vere is a three-time APRA, ARIA and AACTA awarded artist, who has quickly emerged as one of the most dynamic and innovative voices in contemporary Australian screen music. His work stands out for its narrative sensitivity, emotional resonance, and versatility.

Recent works include the Sydney Opera House premiere of River, a concert film in collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, which won the 2023 ARIA award for Best Original Soundtrack, two Screen Music Awards for Best Original Song Written for the Screen and Best Soundtrack Album, and the AACTA award for Best Original Score for a Documentary.

Piers' work has been noted for its strong sense of melody, commitment to story, and bold fusion of genres. For the 2019 Sundance hit, Little Monsters, he created a playful yet gripping soundtrack that combined heartwarming ukulele-driven songs, performed on-screen by Josh Gad and Lupita Nyong’o, with high-adrenaline orchestral horror, sweeping fantasy, and a little death-metal, reflecting the film’s seamless gear shifts between comedy and dread and earning him another AARA Screen Music Award.

Collaborating frequently with visionary directors like Abe Forsythe, Piers has demonstrated a unique ability to balance contrasting moods. His work on Down Under (2017) helped underscore the film’s biting satire, while his music for Wolf Like Me (Peacock Original, 2022 - 2024) offered rich emotional depth whilst interpolating seminal works by Nirvana, INXS, and Queens of the Stone Age, positioning him as a composer unafraid to challenge conventions. His work in high-end television, which seamlessly integrates modern and classical elements, positions him at the forefront of a new wave of film composers.

Piers most recent work is the yet to be released feature film, Addition (TIFF 2024), produced by Bruna Papandrea, Steve Hutensky and Jodi Matterson.
