Swindle
Swindle is ahead of the curve. The South London producer, multi-instrumentalist and composer has spent the past 15 years championing what he calls the "left of centre." His musical community spans grime, dubstep, jazz, soul and rap – all genres he has helped bring from the underground into mainstream conversation through distinctive collaborations. These have produced four of his own albums and records with artists such as Ghetts, Kojey Radical, Celeste, D Double E and Joel Culpepper.
A decade ago, Swindle released his debut album, Long Live the Jazz, fearlessly blending weighty dubstep basslines with live jazz instrumentation. At the time, UK jazz was still regarded as a niche pursuit, but today it is thriving, with young acts like Nubya Garcia even getting her start as part of Swindle’s live band.
Swindle was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 2022 for his work on Kojey Radical’s album Reason to Smile and earned an Ivor Novello nomination in 2023 for their track Payback. His open-eared production process has evolved from London’s grime and dubstep scenes, beginning with 2007’s The 140 Mixtape, featuring early work from Ghetts and Big Narstie, through to 2019’s No More Normal, a genre-spanning showcase of Black British talent including D Double E, Nubya Garcia and Andrew Ashong. His most recent album, 2021’s The New World, was recorded over a week at Real World Studios as an "emergency linkup" for his collaborators during the pandemic.
Beyond his work as a producer and artist, Swindle is making strides in film and television composition. In 2023, he scored Candice Carty-Williams’ eight-part Netflix / BBC series Champion, continuing their collaboration with the 2024 adaptation of her novel Queenie. His recent work also includes composing the soundtrack for BBC’s Crongton, based on Alex Wheatle’s acclaimed books.“I’m never just working on one thing – that’s what keeps me moving and focused,” he says. With film and TV calling and his ever-growing musical community, Swindle remains ahead of the curve – and there’s plenty more to come.
